False Bay May - July 2008

False Bay, South Africa

Monday 16 June 2008

The trip so far has been really good. We've been to a lot of different places and have done a number of different activities. Some of which include:

  • tiling/grouting
  • painting
  • cutting
  • hyacinth clearing
  • refugee work
  • jetty construction
  • general tours - Robbyn Island, Cape Point, Signal Hill, The Cannon, Simon's Town, visiting community centre (Cafda Place of Safety)
  • kids' camps, night walks. obstacle course with the kids, dragon boating
  • many, many braais (African BBQ)
  • swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, battling those waves!
  • much, much training, having joined the local gym
  • African drumming

Overall I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Everybody here seems so hospitable and always willing to help especially the rangers and the security guards.

I have been especially pleased with the religious tolerance and understanding I've been very impressed with one of the rangers (who's a Christian) continually takes me to the Mosque on Fridays. Also a volunteer named Luke has been pretty sound too. :)

Occasionally I have felt out of place, as it has been slightly difficult knowing how to adjust to living with another culture, especially when their lifestyle is so different from mine, however it has still been a very rewarding experience. We have generally bonded well as a group and have been very supportive of each other.

This email has been written with the help of Samuel and Luke, the others are out at the moment so I've decided to email you while internet access is available!Kind regards,

Sameed
